A question I am constantly asked in California is whether we actually have archaeology here. We do. California has a rich history and millions of artifacts, however we are rarely taught about the prehistoric routes.
So for my first blog post, YES, there are tons of sites and artifacts in California.
NO, I will not tell you where they are. Many artifacts are looted each day, and a piece of history is forever lost. Context is one of the most important rules of archaeology. If an artifact is given to you by a looter, it is impossible to know it's full story. Context comes from where that artifact was last used, who used it, what was nearby. We lose valuable information, and more importantly our Indigenous Peoples lose more of their stories.
No, I do not dig up dinosaurs, but if you ask me enough I will send you on a wild goose hunt to find one. And I guarantee it will lead you to modern trash.
If you want to learn more about California follow along on my blog and look into which tribe's land you currently live on.

California Archaeologists are in large demand due to both the massive size of prehistoric sites and the wildfires that uncover them.
